How to Pass the NMLS SAFE Exam on Your First Try

With a 94% first-time pass rate among our students, we know what works. Here are the study strategies and resources that make the difference.

Know the test blueprint

The SAFE MLO National Test has 120 questions (115 scored) and you need a 75% to pass. Questions are drawn from federal mortgage law, general mortgage knowledge, loan origination activities, ethics, and uniform state content.

  • Federal mortgage-related law — roughly a quarter of the exam
  • General mortgage knowledge and products
  • Mortgage loan origination activities
  • Ethics, including fraud, fair lending, and consumer protection

Practice with realistic questions

The single biggest predictor of passing is the number of quality practice questions you work through. Practice under timed conditions and review every answer — including the ones you got right — so you understand the reasoning.

Master the math and the acronyms

A handful of calculations (LTV, DTI, points, and APR concepts) show up reliably. Memorize the core formulas and the alphabet soup of federal laws (RESPA, TILA, ECOA, HMDA) and what each one protects.

Build a two-week plan

Spread study across two weeks rather than cramming. Short, daily sessions with a mock exam every few days will retain far better than a single marathon. Take a full-length timed mock exam the day before to calibrate your pacing.
